The library of the Welte Institute houses the most comprehensive and accessible bibliographic collection in Oaxaca on Oaxaca. The collection of over 10,000 titles in English, Spanish, and other languages includes almost everything written in the past 40 years on Oaxacan architectural history, archaeology, economy, ethnology, geography, history, linguistics, humanities, political science, sociology, and more. The library also possesses an extensive collection of maps and historical documents, some of them extremely rare. The library is free and open to the public.

The Welte Institute serves as home base and facilitator for study abroad and field school programs.

The Welte Institute maintains close ties with local academic and research institutions, and benefits from an extensive network of resident and visiting scholars. Utilizing these human resources, the Institute can arrange for consultants and lecturers – English, Spanish, and bilingual – on the full range of Oaxacan topics.

Drawing on its extensive knowledge of local conditions affecting research, the Welte Institute offers grant administration and consultation services for foreign-funded research projects.

The Welte Institutes organizes and sponsors periodic international symposia on Oaxaca Studies.

The Welte Institute hosts an electronic forum (e-mail list-serve) to which anybody interested in Oaxacan studies may subscribe. Currently the list has approximately 290 subscribers from around the world.

Use of the Library is open to the public and free. However, because the Welte Institute is a non-profit and non-governmental organization that depends upon donations for support, individuals and institutions are encouraged to join. Members receive special privileges.
